2024 Georgia Chemical Fire: What You Should Know

On September 29th, 2024, a dangerous fire at Conyers, Georgia chemical plant created a massive, toxic plume of smoke that could be seen for miles and shut down the county due to air quality concerns.

The fire broke out on the roof of BioLab in Conyers, Georgia, around 5:00 a.m. Officials initially suspected that water from a malfunctioned sprinkler head came in contact with a water-reactive chemical and produced a plume. It was later decided that strong winds from Hurricane Helene damaged the lab’s warehouse, allowing rainwater into the building. Potentially creating a reaction that caused the fire.
